How It Works

How the Estimate Is Calculated

  • Area is width × length for a rectangle, or π × (diameter ÷ 2)² for a circle.
  • Volume in cubic feet is area × (depth in inches ÷ 12). Cubic yards are cubic feet ÷ 27.
  • Tons are cubic feet × material density ÷ 2,000. The calculator uses about 145 lb per cubic foot for compacted hot mix asphalt and about 100 lb per cubic foot for crushed stone base.
